I have a 1994 F-150, 5.0l, im wondering if it is mass air flow or speed density? Is there a easy way to tell? I have 2 hoses going from the filter box to the throttle body.
"Two hoses"--that's the giveaway. You have a speed density setup.
Were it MAF it would have the same twin-butterly throttle body, a plastic "Y" adaptor to join both bores into one large-diameter hose leading across to the air box.
You would also have a '95Calif./'96 50-state truck, and OBD-II.
That's sorta true except Mass air didn't come out til 1994. And I don't think 351's got it until 1995. 300's didn't get Mass air until 1996. (49states) And possibly the 460 never got it. I don't know why not, they used a 302 computer and firing order anyway.
Burning question: was there an OBD-I MAF system available for 4.9L, manual transmission trucks? What was it available on? Which model(s) do I need to be searching the boneyards for? Over 8,500-lb. GVW trucks and vans?
I have seen that some of the newer cars (crown vics, caprices, and the like) are coming with (get this) 6 Cats! I cannot believe that, it's no wonder why car prices are so stinking high!

Mass air, measures the amount of air coming into the engine, and figures the ari/fuel ratio by that.
Speed density, takes a measurement of the speed you are going and figures the air fuel ratio.
Therefore mass air is better, it allows for Modifications to be done to the engine that affect air flow. With speed density, if you change the amount of air going in, then you mess up the calculation of the air fuel ratio by the computer.

Today's cat convertors are more breathable than our years. I guess this would explain why most cars have 4 anymore. My best friend has a 96 Gt 4.6L and his has 4. I can't imagine how it will run with a X-pipe and 2 convertors.
ok its me again, I have put true duel exhaust and a K&N air cone on my truck, its speed density, could that be the reason why it backfires when i down shift?? Is there anyway to cure it?? How hard is it to change it over to a mass air flow system?
