1973 f250 c6 transmission. I was reversing out of my lot and went to put it back in park and the lever moved over to where park would be but wouldn't drop into park. So I when all the way to 1st and back to park and my whole column went loose. Doesn't register any gears it's just flopping around. I tried pulling that roll pin on the lever but it's stuck good. How do you take apart the shift column? Does taking the pin out even help? Any ideas are greatly appreciated. Thanks!

The pot metal shift collar has an internal bridge that connects it to the shift tube. Over time...the bridge begins to crack, eventually breaks off.
Now the shift lever just flops around, because the collar is no longer connected to the shift tube.
This could also be at the other end where it attaches to the transmission. If it comes loose there the shifter will flop around and no gear can be selected.

There was a linkage that lost the clip and fell off but does not seem like its directly connected to the lever like the other set of linkages. It does look like something is broken in the collar. Im still having a hard time getting it off. I pulled the steering wheel and the turn signal assembly along with the C clip on the steering shaft but nothing will budge after all that. Any ideas?

There are two bolts that retain the shift collar to the upper flange, see 3641 in pic.

Ah yes, the top bolt was jammed up.
Well I thought I might post an update now that ive got it all apart and figured out what was wrong. The collar did crack and was left there to spin. There was quite a bit of damage inside where the piece engages on to shift what id imagine a good way to describe would be like a bolt head being rounded off. Ill probably be buying a new lever depending on how much they are because mines pretty marred up. Thanks again for the help, parts are going to be ordered soon and hopefully ill be back on the road by the end of the week. Thanks!
I think I am just going to order one from Ebay. I called all the part stores for an estimate and looks like a reproduction piece off Ebay is the way to go (seems like the parts are reproduction ones from who I called too). Hopefully the aftermarket ones are a little stronger or at least last as long. Id love to buy NOS but with the information I got over the phone didn't sound convincing. Would have been nice if my local NPD had one in stock!
