Lately my truck has been making a noise directly behind the steering wheel, right inside the steering column. It sounds like 2 small pieces of metal rubbing against each other creating a sqeauking/grinding sound. And no it is not coming from the front suspension/steering, as I had replaced everything in it. I have the 1995 Ford XLT steering wheel as well.
Fordication is correct. The bearing housing and it's ***** have parted ways.
Not hard to replace just time consuming. I elected to replace the whole column in my sons 95' Bronco. It takes about an hour just be careful of the gearshift indicator. It's spring loaded and has a tendency to slip out of your fingers.. I paid $150.00 for a whole column with the multi-function switch.

Reason: punctuation
Bearings are not that hard to change out. There are 2 of them in the steering wheel. Upper and lower. It is a bit time consuming but there are videos all over the internet now on how to do it and what tools you will need. It also does not cost much.
