The thing about buying a used engine is that ideally, you want to see it run. Of course, in our hobby beggars can't be choosers.
Very true. It would be nice to see it run first, but I've never been able to score an engine from a seller that could fire it up for me. I just had to poke and hope.
Once you get that engine rebuilt, here's the process for firing the IDI up from a stand.

If it is a 6.9 then that would make my life a lot easier. That video will definitely come in handy! I do wish the engine could have been fired up first to see if it's okay in the first place but it allows me to do a quick replacement of all gaskets and maybe bearings as well so I can give it a longer life and not run into any issues while it's in the truck.

It really doesn't matter if it's a 6.9 or 7.3 for the most part. Unless you plan to mix-and-match internals.
When I was rebuilding my 7.3, I put in a spare 6.9 that was resting on a stand in my garage. I basically moved all the injectors, electrical, GP's, GP controller, turbo, and air filter housing from the old 7.3 to the spare 6.9 and ran it. Motor mounts and tranny mounted up no prob. From the outside, the 7.3 and 6.9 are near identical.
But if you want to swap over pistons, crank, heads, studs, etc, then that's a different story.
I decided to pick up this pair of engines for only 100 bucks! One is a 7.3 (not sure what year) and the other is a 6.9. I've decided I want to do a really quick tear down on the 6.9 to see what needs to be replace. It has an unknown amount of miles on it. What parts are interchangeable between a 7.3 and 6.9? I know they are basically the same motor. I was thinking of just replacing some gaskets and cleaning up the motor well. Hopefully wont need to add new bearings but I will if I need to. The 7.3 is the one with a dead cylinder while the 6.9 has a bad head gasket so I'm very hoping I can make some quick fixes and get it in the truck! Any advice would be very helpful 😁
if the 6.9 had a bad head gasket, i bet you are going to find a bad head too.
check the 7.3 out before you condemn it. a "dead cylinder" could be anything from a hole in the piston, to a pushrod that popped out of the rocker arm socket.

I'll be sure to take a look at the 7.3. I can still use the parts off my current engine as well. The engine in the truck runs well, it just has a cracked block. I can always swap heads with the 6.9 in the truck. Tomorrow I'll start a tear down of the motors to see what could have gone wrong with them. It should be a fun day of checking out the engines and figuring out which I want to use.
Welcome aboard. I’m new as well and these guys have helped me out quite a bit already. There is a wealth of knowledge here and they don’t mind sharing. Good luck
hey guys i have a f250 6.9 1997 single cab 2wd and i bought a f350 dually 1990 and it has a 7.3 i wanna swap that engine to my f250 but i wanna turbo it what you guys recomend?
I started tearing into my 6.9 that I bought and found that this must be the engine with the dead cylinder because I found a chipped valve. I'm not worried since I can always use the heads off my current motor but now I know what was wrong with it.
there was also quite a bit of rust in the cylinder walls and on the head so I'm hoping I can just clean it off with a good brush
Wow! What a score. A 6.9 and a 7.3 for $100? That's something I dream about. I'm sure they're both going to need some work done aside from what he's told you. It doesn't look like they were covered and just out in the open.
Either way, I'd love to have a 6.9 to build and sit on an engine stand until the one in my truck goes boom in 20 years...gotta start hoarding parts now!
And that is a really clean truck, it definitely deserves to live on!

I really love this truck and I can't wait till I can drive it around. I figured both engines would need work regardless so I don't mind at all! If I find what is wrong with them it just makes it easier to repair them quicker. I'm hoping to get this engine all cleaned up and put together in about a week. The only thing I'm a little fuzzy on is getting the IP timing correct and how to time it correctly starting at TDC.

If you can't borrow a ferret meter, it's harder. I think there is some company that still sells adapters from the injector line to the timing gun.
I didnt realize the IP had a timing arrow on it as well. I probably should have guess that though being it was a gear. I appreciate it though! I almost completely finished taking the engine apart when I noticed 2 of the pistons looked a little odd.
do these pistons look bad at the bottom to you guys? Or is this normal to happen?
