Nice truck! Hope the previous owner was just lazy and you fix it with a new block heater & oil cooler. If not, it's still worth good money in that nice of shape.
Well I was not as lucky as I thought I would be. I removed the starter and to my surprise Didnt find a block heater but found a crack. I'm a little disappointed but I found someone not too far away that is selling another complete engine so the next thing i get to do now is remove the engine. thanks for all the suggestions to help!
NO WAY! Sorry to hear the bad news. Hopefully you can get that spare engine for a good deal.
It is bad news for me but it gives me a good opportunity to refresh a motor before I put it in 😁
I do have a question about the engine numbers. I've called around a bit to find an engine for it and everyone told me there was 2 6.9l diesel engines and they have different serial numbers on them. Where can I find the number on my engine? It's an 85 6.9 and I heard that the old style engine has it on the left side under the oil cooler and the new style I think on the right. Am I correct?
So I've been having a hard time find a 6.9 for my truck. I found a few but they are upwards of 3 hours away and I would still have to pull them out of a truck. I found some 7.3 though that are closer. Would it be better to try and pick up a 7.3 instead? Someone was selling 2 7.3's but one with a possible blown head gasket and the other with a dead cylinder. They are offering both for 100 bucks. I heard if they are older than 94 I should be able to use them in my truck. Should I take the chance?
If there were 2 7.3ls within 3 hours of me for $100 each I would jump on them like a rat on a Cheeto! Regardless of what momma said.
The thing about buying a used engine is that ideally, you want to see it run. Of course, in our hobby beggars can't be choosers. If you buy an engine and the owner says it has issues then chances are he's correct. Would it be better to have a 7.3l with a blown head gasket or dead hole vs. a 6.9l with a cracked block? Only you can answer that.
FWIW, I drove over 3 hours to Dallas, TX to visit relatives last summer, then my Dad and I drove an hour to Ft. Worth where I bought a 7.3l IDIT for $650. They told me the engine was bad, but it had a turbo and it rotated by hand, so I think I came out ahead.
I'm not one to pass up a good deal, that's how I got this truck in the first place
I just wanted to make sure they will be fine in the truck. I'm looking for something I can swap in if I can get it working. I might even be able to make a Frankenstein engine out of the 2 if I decide to pick em up. Is there anything I can look at on the engine to indicate what year they might be? And what are some things that I can look at that are common issues with these engines?
if it has an injector pump on top and glow plugs going through the intake, it is an IDI and will work. if there is a fuel filter canister on top of the intake it is a powerstroke engine and will not work.

well on one of them it looks to have a possible filter on it but I feel like I also see an injection pump one. Do they look like they might be idi?
The first picture is definitely an IDI. I would definitely keep the oil pressure sensor and possibly the 6.9's heads, i have heard of people having better luck with those on the 7.3 due to blocked coolant passages on the 7.3's heads. Electronically, these motors only need power to the fuel shutoff solenoid on the injection pump to run.
Maybe I accidentally took a picture of the same engine twice but this weekend I'm going to go check em out and hopefully pick em up. I don't mind putting a little more work into getting a decent running motor! Besides, I love tearing engines apart!

ya same one different angles but for sure IDI and will fit
Just look at the Numbers from the area on the Block that I showed in my Link. then you will know exactly what it is
