My girl and I bought a 1981 f250 4wd and it has a sleep on camper in the back already for $500. He claimed it wouldn't start because of a bad icm, well it was just a bad battery but it was running on maybe 3 cylinders and definitely had several stuck lifters. So I did sparkplugs, wires, cap, and rotor cap, then an oil change and some MMO and now it's running a lot better and the lifters freed up. So I took it for a drive down the road and it felt like there was no acceleration, the truck is already sitting on 33 mud tires that are partially deflated in the front and a 1,000 pound plus camper in the back but I couldn't get up to 60 mph, the truck was kind of shaky, and it felt like it has no acceleration. Am I crazy and this is normal or should it at least pick up speed faster? This is my first 4.9 and I have to get this thing ready in 20 days for a 7 hour trip through the mountains for a festival!
Welcome to FTE.
Well them 33" tires are not helping to whole picture and would get something close to maybe 30".
Do you know what rear gear ratio it has? Post up a picture of the label on the left door post and we can look it up.
Also know the 300 six / 4.9 well get the job done just not vary fast.
It was used in larger trucks again not vary fast.
Did you do a compression check on the motor?
Could be it's tired and could use a rebuild?
When you said could not get up to 60 MPH how fast did it go in what gear and not rpm?
I am thingies a quick fix is smaller tires.

I don't know how to do a compression test and it's hard to take it somewhere with limited funds and a big camper in the back. That's what I wanted to make sure of the speedometer isn't working but it was definitely pulling in 3rd just felt like it wasn't accelerating much.
I'm sure the engine is tired and the oil pressure is low, I need to hook up a mechanical gauge so I can see actual pressure and put 20w and some lucas in here
