Need help with a problem

Hello all,

My pickup is running a bit rough and Im hoping you can point me in the right direction. Ive got a 92 F250 with the 460. Its got about 120k miles and aside from eating oil and being a bit light on power, it had always run fine till a while back. It started to seemingly misfire, or something like that. I changed the cap, rotor, wires and plugs and it seemed ok for about a month or two, then started missing again. I put a cheapie cap and rotor in it previously so I again replaced them but no improvement.

Took it to a mechanic to get the fuel filter replaced and get some advice. He said the filter was really plugged and suggested it was bad gas. I ran a few more tanks through it but no improvement. Its getting worse. I tried to pull the cap and rotor to see if the mechanic had done anything with them, but the cap seems like its sealed on the distributor. Even appears to be a bit of black cement or something around the rim. Cant get the cap off without likely destroying it. Not sure what thats about.

I dont quite know how to explain the problem other than its misfiring, but its not consistent like a timing issue or a bad wire might be, I guess. Its intermittant, more pronounced or noticeable at low rpm, and it sounds .... unhealthy. 4th gear at about 2000 rpm and it bucks until i let almost completely off the gas.

I dont have much in the way of diagnostic tools and Im not sure whatever computer I have in it would offer diagnostic info like the newer models. Any thoughts on how I should proceed short of finding another mechanic?

Many thanks for any help.

Try getting that cap off, if some one sealed it , its not letting the static charge disipate. Thats why it has the little breather cap on it.
