I am looking at a '99 F350 4wd, four tire crew cab (7.3). It seems to have a steering problem where the steering is very "tight". The vehicle does not readily return to going straight on its own. If you make a small turn of the wheel going down the highway the truck will just continue on that turn until you specifically move it back toward center. If you let go of the wheel as you are coming out of a turn, the vehicle will head toward the inside of the turn where most would straighten out or, if anything, head toward the outside of the turn.
The dealer has already replaced two ball joints, replaced the tires and aligned the vehicle. I have driven several other SD's and while some show this tendency slightly, none show it to this degree.
Any ideas on what would cause this and how to fix it? The dealer and I would both like to make the deal happen, but I would use the vehicle for hauling horse trailers and I can have one I have to wrestle to go straight. Thanks!
Wow!! I figured it was only my truck doing that!! I just got my '99 F-350 out of the shop yesterday for the same problem. I had all new ball joints installed which seemed to help the problem, however I still notice it being much stiffer than my '00 F-250 I just sold last week. It was a gas however the F-350 is diesel. I've decided Im going to have to live with it. It really doesnt bother me too bad anymore now that I've gotten use to it.
