Fuel pimp on the frame rail went out. I replaced it, drove the truck home then a day or two later was driving across the yard from the house to the shop, stopped and started to back it up and it shut off..... hasnt started since. Finally after hours or trying got the cap off the filter bowl just to find an empty bowl. Today i dropped the tank and the rubber hose that runs from the port on the front of the tank to the port on the back of the tank crumbled. Replaced it. The in tank pump is reading 15 - 15,5 on the voltmeter. Any help would be awesome. I purchased a new one just in case from O'Reillys before i dropped the tank and ofcourse its the one for the gas motor
There is no in-tank pump for the 7.3L. There is a pickup foot with screen (which has a tendency to crumble and fall off in the tank as the years add up), a level sending unit, and piping that gets the fuel out of the tank and on its way to the suction of the fuel pump mounted on the inside of the driver's side framerail under the cab.
If you cruise over to the 1999-2003 7.3L sub-forum lots of people over there willing to help. Many of us modify the fuel pump suction (tank to pump) to get rid of the disconnect fittings which introduce air into the line (called the 'Hutch' mod) and the aforementioned pickup foot.
One other thing I'll throw out is that the 7.3L really likes OEM or OEM manufacturer parts. Generic auto parts store replacements may save you money now but do not have the same lifetime as the more expensive OEM replacement (e.g. Bosch made the fuel pump for the 7.3L so is a suitable replacement).
I have requested that this thread be moved to the 7.3L forum for you. You will get plenty of help there to resolve your issue.
Thanks for tour help . I think I will do the mods you suggested once I solve the issuse as to why im not getting any fuel to the filter housing. Spent this afternoon dropping the tank on my 99 just to rob the filter/ sending unit out of it to try in the 01 since I know its a good one. Thanks also for redirecting my post Im still tryin to figure this forum out .... Day 2 here!
A thread by "Wild Wendi" talking about a "pimp" on the frame rail will probably get a lot of looks here Anyway the Hutch mod is something all these trucks will need sooner or later, sounds like yours is due.
