pros....better exaust flow and all benefits that are associated with that...
cons legality of the issue... emissions
yes you legally have to have one in washington and any other state for that matter.
And, as some of the 'racers' on other sites have indicated, the cat didn't make any measurable difference in performance when a larger turbo back exhasst was installed.
The older I get, the harder it is to breath anyway....
help me out and leave it on !
Your engine needs SOME back pressure... replace the downpipe and exhaust piping but leave the cat....
************
I'm doing a test with my '03 6.0L Ex - I just replacied the muffler with a straight pipe as a first step...
so far the sound is a LITTLE on the loud side, but not overly so, and I KNOW there's better flow... haven't quantified it yet, but there is...
and then there's the 100 lbs of muffler weight that is gone now!
This hasn't voided my warranty and I still meet the FEDERAL legal emission laws - I have this silly thing about NOT breaking the law.

Hey Bow. I had my Cat back up on me in my old Dodge and I took it to a muffler shop in Kirkalnd. I know that'ss quite a ways for you. However they replaced the whole system from the headders back with 3"pipe, 3" in and out cat and 3" Muffler... all by Flowmaster. In my past expierence I would highly reccommend Flowmaster for bothe the cat and Muffler. I could tell the difference in Take off and HP Gains. and it sounded Great. However you will definately find cheaper setup's out there. but FWIW.. The results were worth the extra cash.
YMMV

BTW How's the crabbing at Birch Bay? I heard they let the natives in and wiped out the rest of the season?
Thanks to all of you for the imput! That is why I asked the question. I had heard of some guys taking the Cat off and it made big differances in performance. Not that I need to do anything like that............................just wondering!
foneguy,
The crabbing was good! My bowhunting buddy went out several times last month and did pretty good. I did not hear anything about the natives thou.................
That' s good to hear.. I'm up at Beachwood about 20 times a year for crabbing and relaxing. Someone at the Birchbay Grocery store said that crabbing was lousy and they let natives in the bay for commercial crabbing for a 24hr period or something like that. we wnt out that day and did horrible with rings.
Good luck with your exhaust, if you need a reccomendation for the install? I know of someone in Kirkland that will do all the pipe and bending custom and use all flowmaster cats and mufflers.
I replaced my cat with a Magnaflow Cat. Sounded and ran way better. Find out if the muffler place will do it before you buy one. Federal law says you cant replace the Factory cat for 5 years.
