Hey all, I'm in the home stretch of my spare steering gear box rebuild for my 64. I was told that there is a specific way to reload the ***** into the worm gear, and was hoping someone could clear this up.
Thanks in advance.

Sorry, I haven't a clue. Never worked on one, don't have a shop manual.

well... My 64 shop manual doesn't list that process unfortunately...guess I'll have to double check, count the lock to lock and left and right turns and call it good.
On recirculating ball steering boxes, the ***** are two sizes, around a thou different, so not visible to the naked eye.
This is so they won't bind, so it IS important.
When reloading same, you MUST alternate small and large *****. Else your steering may bind, and that would be bad.
Yup, it's a pain, I've done it a few times. I use a brand name mic, Starett, Mitutoyo, Browne and Sharpe, or similar.

Ok, so when you say alternate them, do I stick one size all on one side and one size all on the other or one larger ball, then one smaller ball on both worm tracks? also I have heard different stories on the amount off ***** required. last I heard I added too many and it had the correct amount of 54 ***** to begin with.
Thanks in advance
