New or used?

What's your payload rating?

What's your GCVWR?

What's your unloaded weight?

Off the top of my head I'd suspect that you'd be okay with about anything under 8,000 pounds, but that's a pretty rough estimate.

Not sure on your truck's door sticker numbers, but my dad has a 97 with that engine and rear gears but with the ZF5, his 5th wheel is 8250 without water and it struggles on the local hills. By that i mean on a 3-4% grade, floored in 3rd and 42mph is all it's got. When it's flat it will just barely maintain speed in OD. For cross country as you mentioned you'll probably want 7k # or less or you may not make it over any mountain ranges above 20mph

8K max. You would be better off with a class C.

X2^^ - or a much smaller, lighter pull-behind.

I had a work truck of that vintage but with 3.54 gears but that motor, the truck weighed close to 10K 24/7 and it was a dog and when I pulled one of my work trailers it was a real dog and it would get hot, the trailer was up 5K depending on what was on it. When it was new and empty it felt like a power house but loaded and ready to work not so great.

Beyond the weight issue is the enormous wind resistance of a fifth wheel trailer. It takes a lot of horsepower to pull that bif sail down the highway, and if you get into a headwind situation you won't like the results at all. My first truck/trailer combo was marginal over flat ground with no wind, but a headwind would put me into a situation where I couldn't maintain speed. It would drop down a gear to compensate and would start to accelerate, but then upshift and start to slow down again. Not a fun drive!!
