Finding a PCM That Will Work
I swapped a 98 Explorer EFI 5.0L engine into my 54 F-100. In doing so I deleted the automatic transmission for a T-5 manual. Since I am using my stock gas tank I also deleted the fuel evap. system. The (7) codes I am getting all have to do with the transmission delete and the evap. delete. The engine starts and runs pretty good but it is just not quite right as it is looking for the automatic transmission. I have been looking to have the PCM flashed and reprogrammed but not having much luck. Does anyone know of a good company to contact. I have been told I need a different PCM altogether to work with the manual transmission. I need a PCM/ECM/ECU that will work with the 1998 Ford MAF 5.0L engine using a 5 speed transmission. If anyone knows which Ford vehicle uses this type if PCM or know of a good programmer to make my present PCM work, please let me know.
Thanks for any information you can give.
Bob
If you have already googled "1998 Explorer tuner", then ignore:

lots of others.
I have been looking at Ebay today and saw a few computers for 98 Mustang 4.6 engine with a manual transmission. I don't think there was any cars or trucks in 98 that had a 5.0L engine other than the Explorer and those are only automatic. This engine is MAF and the 4.6 engines I have seen are also MAF. Since the 4.6 is an 8 cylinder like the 302. I wonder if the 4.6 computer would know it is connected to a 5.0. I am not sure if the PCM pins for the 4.6 would match the existing 5.0 pins.
85e150, I have looked at some of the tuners on-line but I don't know how well they would work on my present PCM. I have read that all Ford PCMs from 96 to present are programmable but I don't know what all can be done with this one. I would like to get with someone that has successfully made these modifications.
The companies that I have talked to all want you to give them the VIN that the PCM belongs to and the PCM part number. If I get a used PCM without knowing the VIN they won't program it. Maybe they would be happy enough if I give them the VIN from the Explorer I took my PCM out of and the part number of whatever PCM I buy if I can find one for a manual transmission. I don't know if that would work. They would be getting the Explorer VIN and a PCM part number from a 98 4.6 Mustang.
I may have backed myself into a corner!
