Mounting Points for Engine removal 351M

Hello,
in the past weeks I have taken out my leaking transmission broken it down and started to rebuild it. Now that the transmission is out I thought it would be a good idea to take the engine out too, to replace the leaking main seals, give it a good inspection (compression test, etc.) and repaint it.

After some research I found some pictures on this thread of people taking out the 351M with chains, mounting them to the exhaust bolts. Some comments stated that it was not a good idea to do that.

So I wanted to ask for any ideas on how to get the engine securely attached to the engine hoist.

Thank You

I have done the exhaust bolt thing before and everything went fine. You can also wrap the chain completely around the manifold and use a bolt to bolt the chain to itself making a loop around the manifold.

If you want to get fancy, you can buy one of those plates that bolt to the intake after you take the carb off to lift the engine out. You have to remember though, the carb is held on by 4, 5/16-18 bolts and it lifts the whole engine out fine. So I don't see any problem with using two 3/8-16 bolts for the manifolds to pull the engine out.

I never thought about wrapping the chain around the exhaust mainfold. That sounds like a great option for me, as comming by inch bolts is hard around here. Do you think running one chain from the passanger side rear to the driver side front of the engine is enough? Or what kind of chain arragement do you have good experience with?

I have used a chain on 2 exhaust & intake manifold bolts like you describe and been fine. A load balancer can help.

A diagonal chain works ok. The only thing that usually happens, the chains sometimes press against the valve covers. I have never had one get dented, but sometimes I do put some cardboard under the chain to cushion the valve cover a little bit. Using the bolt method farther out on the exhaust manifold corners helps get rid of this problem.

And don't be surprised if you lift the engine up, struggle with it some, and then find out you have to let it down and re-position the lifting hook on the chain. I find the front of the engine needs to be tilted up to get it clear of the motor mounts. Once clear of the motor mounts you can slide it forward off the transmission. To help this along, I would lift the engine straight up as high as it will go till the transmission hits the firewall. Then put a jack under the transmission with a piece of plywood to spread the load on the tranny pan, and hold the trans in that up high position. Then you can let down on the engine ever so slightly and wiggle it forward and free from the trans.

Just wanted to say that I successfully got the engine out, sealed up, and back in the car. I used a chain attached to the ac compressor bracket and one wrapped around the exhaust manifold. Worked perfectly.

I appreciated the help. Probably would have been too scared to take it out otherwise.

Thanks!
