A/C compressor... I think?

Hey guys,
From what I've read, AC compressor failures are somewhat common with these 6.0's. I suspect that my AC compressor may be starting to have issues. When my truck revs between about 1600-1800 rpm, I can hear a low growl, or vibration coming from the engine compartment. Initially I thought it may be the tensioner or idler pulleys. They were cheap enough so I went ahead and replaced them, since they are still original. I have 132k on the odo now. After swapping out the pulleys, the noise is still there. It doesn't matter if the AC is turned on or off, the noise still happens at 1600-1800 rpm. It does however sound more obvious when the AC is turned on, and the clutch is engaging and disengaging.. So what I understand, is that these compressors can seize up and and burn up belts, and cause all kinds of other stuff to happen. My question is, when these AC compressors seize up, is it the clutch and or clutch bearing that seizes up, or is it something internal to the compressor itself that seizes up? I'd like to avoid replacing the entire compressor, if I can just replace the clutch and bearing. Thoughts?.......

Thanks

For me and my thinking with 100k on the original one I replaced the entire compressor. it was too difficult to find just a clutch unit and hope it was the right one. To verify undo the belt and check the pulley bearing on the AC compressor by hand while laying underneath the truck. It should spin free and no noise.
On a side note, a worn powersteering pump or low dirty fluid will growl.

So I poked around a little more this evening. I found the source of the noise I was hearing. It ended up being the bearing in the alternator. Took the alternator down to the ol' autozone and swapped it out under lifetime warranty. Reinstalled it, and good to go. With these diesel engines as loud as they are, it's sometimes hare to tell exactly where a noise is coming from. This alternator lasted me 5 years. Hopefully this one will last a little longer. Well at least now I have a new tensioner and idlers to go along with my new alternator.

Even better. I'd take an Alt swap over an AC or PS pump swap anyday.

I have all the fancy "audio" test gear (e.g. Chassis Ear), but few stack up to the 3' length of rubber tubing held up to one's ear.
