I have a large camper too and it's a pain to do the tailgate by yourself.
I use a hydraulic table from harbor freight and a 3'x4' piece of plywood to place under the tailgate.
It still takes two sets of hands but there is no heavy work.
Place it flat side down on the table.
If you get the electric release tailgate make sure you open it before you unhook the wires.
There also should be dummy plugs in the gove box to place over the connectors for the tailgate when it is off.
