I just recently got a 1989 f 250 light duty with a 4.9 5 speed, my question is about the serp belt and water pump. The truck is factory equipped with a/c but a previous owner took the comp off and changed the serpentine belt to one for a belt for a truck without a/c. The question I have is the a/c belt for a/c and the one for non- a/c turn the water pump in different directions. When I looked up a water pump for this truck it didn't specify with or with out a/c. Does this pump work in both directions on an 89 4.9l ?????
I really doubt Ford would go to the trouble and expense of having 2 different water pumps for a/c and non-a/c, but I am just guessing. That doesn't mean the PO routed the belt correctly, tho. You really need to see the diagram for routing the belt on a non-a/c truck to be sure.
Update: I checked RockAuto and there is no callout for a/c or non-a/c applications on the water pump, so I am confident in saying that the water pump turns the same direction in both applications. If you are concerned, you need to confirm your belt is routed correctly.
