Zf5

Can anyone tell me if this is a zf5 or a Mazda m50d? Is currently mounted to a 5.0l out of a f250 which I thought was a Mazda 5 speed but the guy said that it came out of a 7.3idi originally. Anyone know by the pics or if a zf5 will bolt up to a 5.0l?

If that’s the fill plug in the bottom pic I don’t think that’s a zf5. Zf5s have a big plug that takes like a 7/8? Wrench or something on them. A zf5 should have an identification plate higher up on the drivers side of the trans underneath the grease and grime

Turns out the guy had his facts wrong about the original donor. Was in fact a Mazda 5 speed. Thanks everyone.

I found a reference elsewhere that claims zf5’s came in three bellhousing patterns small block, big block and diesel. Different ratios between the three as well.

Indeed, definitely not a ZF5. ZF5 case looks nothing like that, and has provisions for a PTO on each side.

Beat me to it, the ZF's pto covers are the dead givaway. While a person with a little work can interchange big block and diesel transmissions, they will not interchange with a small block.

OP you are correct on the gear ratios, the diesels have the narrow ratio (high first and reverse, closer spacing) the gas version has the wide ratio (low first and reverse, wider spread, as is more suitable to a higher reving engine with less off idle torque)

I do believe the Diesel and the SBF ZF5s had the same ratios. Only the BBF gassers got the wide-ratio gears.

The SBF ZF5s were internal slave while the Diesel and 460 units got an external.
