i was told the key fob will do remote start. Also told I could down load and configure Ford Pass which would track the truck with gps and start the truck from anywhere. Free for one year, then pay per month. After 2 months I received a letter from Ford saying that in appreciation of me being a good customer, Ford Pass would be free for life of the vehicle.
both types of remote start work very well.
I recently added remote start to my 18XLT.
I had the hood switch from the factory. Start the truck and pop the hood. If you have the required hood switch, the instrument cluster will say the hood is open/ajar.
If hood switch is present, then adding the Ford remote start / security module under the dash and forscan to activate the system is all thats needed to make the key fob remote start your truck via lock-unlock-lock.
I have tried using the app, but as other have stated, it requires another antenna or piece of hardware. I havent pursued the app starting as I not interested in it & dont need it.
Do a google search for 2017 SD remote start module Fairway Ford. The module is about $170.
Takes 5-10min to easily install into the back of the OBDII port under the drivers side of the dash.

The system you mention is the older method that used the Ford Remote Access app. I installed that type in both a 2014 and a 2016. I did install the additional antenna and got a bidirectional fob for the times I didn't use the cell phone starting method.
