just wondering

I was reading post and replies and was wondering how you would know how well the ports line up when the intake is lowered onto the heads?

Am I missing something here, I don't see how you could tell since you can't see the ports after installation.

Thanks

This is my first 400 and I am assuming they can be safely milled 0.060" . Is this right? Next question is how much does the intake side have to be milled?
Thanks in advance,

that is about the thickness of your head gasket...yes you can safely do that. 1/16 =.0625 ..most will only go that far anyway
check a local "reputable" machine shop seewhat they say.

back to R's question. more CR is something I have been considering for my 400. if you want to get away from the cost of milling and missaligned parts, go for thinner head gaskets. for every .010" change in gasket size is almost 3cc change in the combustion chamber. dropping .020" thickness should raise your CR by.5 or better. but even this way you can cause more harm than good this being probably the most important gasket. do the research. if you go too thin without o-rings you'll have fluids where you don't want them. also retorque head bolts after first engine warm up. check out your options here, you'll be surprised.

Well, I found the book (HP Books) and the magic multiplier is 1.0
Mill 40 off the heads mill 40 off the face, etc. But there was a mention of milling off the manifold to block interface as well.

Big mopars use the valley cover but small mopars seal intake to block and it is most common with them to mill the head on two sides and not the manifold.
I know different pistons would do the trick, but the engine is freshly rebuilt and in a $500 truck I don't want to spend too much money.

What gets me is that about the time I started planning to replace the head gaskets there was a set of Ross forged flattops on Ebay that went for less than $100, but I couldn't get excited over them. I hope one of you ended up with them because at 20% of list and brand new they were a steal.

In an ideal world I'd get a set of Aussie 2V heads and build custom dished pistons that would only have the dish under the open part of the chamber so as to maximize squish. In the mile-high city I would probably run on pump regular at 9:1

Anyway thanks for all the replies.

R.
