Since I've owned the truck it's had alot of chatter and disturbing noises when I use the 4 wheel drive. I originally thought it was all in the front drive shaft since all 3 u joints are in rough shape.
I got under in today and pulled the drive shaft and checked the ujoints in the front end. On the drivers side the ujoint seems fine but their's alot of play where the shaft goes into both the hub and the axle tube.
Grabbing the yokes I can move the whole thing around at least a 1/4". I assume this isn't normal since the passenger side has no play. It also has a rubber ring just hanging on the hub side.
I'm just curious if anyone knows what I'm getting into before I tear it down? What parts I'll be needing?
Thanks
I'd pull the locking hub on the side that has the excess play. There is a pretty stout snapring on the stub axle to control the end play. The hanging dust shield is very common, but to change it require a fair bit of work.
I don't think I did a very good job of describing the problem. I can't move the axle in and out of the tube. It's side to side play as if a bearing around the stub axle is gone.
It's been 10 yrs since I've had one these apart and it was a much older dana 60. I think on it their was a bearing on the inside of the spindle. Looking at diagrams has me confused. It looks like things changed at some point and perhaps I need a whole new hub or a hub bearing unit. I can't seem to find if this changed in a certain year or on certain models.
Rockauto lists a spindle bearing for a 2001 f350 with the d50 but nothing for a d60. I was hoping to have parts on hand before I get into it so the truck wouldn't be down for several days.
Thanks for the reply.
I got my drive shaft redone with new ujoints and centering ball. All my mystery noises have stopped so hopefully this front end thing isn't serious and can wait till I have another reason to tear into it.

There’s still a needle bearing in unit hub. You can drive it out with a brass punch and replace it. I’m 99.99% sure the unit bearing is the same between the 50 and the 60 for that year. Since the needle bearing comes with a new unit bearing, if the part number is the same for both, well, you can do the math.

Thanks, now that I'm searching for "needle bearing " I'm finding the info I'm looking for and know what I'm getting into. Looks like you were correct about the d50 and 60 using the same part, other sights have it listed for both.
