The balance problem only occurs under higher load. I can drive the truck easy and the balance code doesn't come back. I wonder if that makes any difference as a indicator of the problem. I will change the 8 injector Saturday.
Replaced injector 8. Removed the EGR and put on block off plates. Truck runs pretty good and is not ruff on heavy acceleration now. The only difference is that the cylinder 1 and 8 are exactly opposite now. if cylinder 1 goes +7 cylinder 8 will go -7. Before this change cylinder 8 would just slightly go negative. Would I be able to see any issues if I pull the valve covers? Also way less smoke out the exhaust almost none.
I ended up having to tear it down some. I pulled the valve covers and had a few bent pushrods and a fully broken one. I noticed some bad lifters and had to pull the heads I cleaned the heads put in all new pushrods, replaced the bad lifters and lifter guides and a couple new rocker arms for ones that looked worn. The cam looked pretty fresh even though it chewed the lifters up.The only part that really sucked was pulling the turbo with the cab on the rest of the work was pretty good.
I think my initial damage was caused by the jerk that traded it in with the dpf and egr being put back on and the truck not being tuned back to stock and then me driving it with a clogged dpf for 6 months. Plus I do not know what tune the previous owner had on the truck and I may have been pulling my travel trailer with a hot tune. Now I have a tuner with known tunes and the truck is great.
I pulled the valve covers and saw the carnage. Stuff was bent up. When I took the heads off I didnt see any additional damage so I just rebuilt the stuff that was damaged. I have put about 50k on the truck since and its still good. Runs great. I prob have more pics if your interested.

Im not a mechanic or an engineer but it seems like the motor was designed to catch the debris and keep it from destroying the bottom end. All the damaged parts were trapped in top and only very tiny parts were in oil pan.
Thanks for the reply looks like I’m going to pop the valve covers off mine Friday I’m having the same issue you was having.passed compression test but black smokes pretty bad on acceleration and have injector codes
I’m not sure at what point the push rods could have bent tho I don’t tow much and drive the truck easy.
I drive slow and only pull at 10k lbs. camper and it still did that fine at the time but was smoky.
I think they bend over time. I think mine bent because the clogged dpf from the D***head that traded in the truck with DPF back on but didn't tune it back to stock. The push rods slowly bent and caused to much slack then the rockers came of the tracks and my problems started. I had rocker arms that had the "fingers" off the valves. ( I dont know the real terms)

Yes all cab on and it wasn't too bad except for the turbos. They are a HELLBEAST to get off with the cab on but I had the luxury of using another vehicle so I took my time.
I did buy new turbo clamps to replace the ones I beat to death taking off.
