Power Steering pressure hose swivel?

New hose for pressure size. When tightened down the hose is able to swivel. The old one did not as far as I can remember.

This is the old hose....far as I can tell it looks the exact same.

What year is the truck? 1973/77 uses a different P/S pump and pressure hose than 1978/79.

1973/77: Ford/Thompson "pencil neck" pump has a steel reservoir. The P/S pressure hose threads onto the pump.

1978/79: Ford C-II pump has a plastic reservoir. The P/S pressure hose connects to the pump with a qwik connect fitting.

Well the truck is a 78. The reservoir is plastic. But it is a franken truck. No way for me to tell if it's the original.

If it has a plastic reservoir, it's the C-II pump that was introduced in 1978 on everything except Econolines and cars w/Hydro-Boost (both used the Saginaw pump).

OK. What is a quick connect fitting? The old one in the pic is why I took off of it. It looks exactly like the one I bought but I didn't think I could swivel the hose on it.

Well I just picked one off Rock Auto for a 78 F150 4WD w/o Supercab and that's what they sent me. I'll take the new one off and see if it is the same fitting on the pump end.

As the replacement hose does not have a flared end, rather, an O-ring, I would expect some movement to be normal. The ring is what gives you the seal.

Yes, it's supposed to swivel. Your old one didn't because it was probably caked up with crud.

Mine is a 78 as well, and like yours, literally a Frankenstein. It's got parts from 67 through 96 *******ized onto it, and nothing, absolutely nothing looks like the catalog pictures when I go to order stuff for "1978 Ford f250 supercab"

The exact same thing happened to me. Pressure hose blew apart, ordered the correct hose, and like usual, if course it looked NOTHING like what I'd taken off. And mine was seized in the PS box. Had to cut it off and put a socket and heat on it. Did NOT swivel.

The new hose fit better than the old one, and now swivels as designed for the flex of the motor. No leaks, clears radiator hose and PS belt far better than my old one.

You're going to be OK.

Thats good to hear....here is a picture of the 2 ends. The nut on the old one will not even spin on the pipe.....but not only does the new one swivel I can also wiggle the pipe a bit. The new pipe does not have a shoulder like the old one.

Dosent look like your new one is flared like the old one, hopefully she seals up. I ended up taking my pressure hose to a hose shop and they made a match for me, cuz like you guys the one I got in the mail didnt match my fittings...

Guys, I have a 78 f-150 4x4 and so far it has been 100% stock to the best of my knowledge. I am having power steering issues as well and working on bleeding it to determine if its the pump pr whatever. Anyway I was looking at the hoses etc. last night and noticed the pressure hose seemed loose. I tightened the fitting and the movement still exists and the hose doesn't leak. I assumed this is per design to allow for engine movement.
