hi:
i posted this question in the trans forum but got no response so i thought i'd try here.
which auto trans was original equipment for an 82 I6 F100? (c4, aod etc)
how major an undertaking would it be to replace a 4sp with the auto trans (shifter mounted on floor)?
is the original auto trans considered to be one of the "good" automatics?
If you have a 3 spd transmission it is either a C-4 or C-6, both of these are tough and will take some punishment. If you have an automatic with 4 spd's...then you've got an AOD...which really aren't worth much in stock trim. I've blown several of them just tooling around town.
As for swapping from 4spd to auto, its not very hard either, yank the driveshaft, trans, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing and flywheel. Replace the flywheel with an automatic flexplate and throw the auto trans back up there, tighten the torque converter nuts securely to the flex plate, hook up all your lines/linkages and put the driveshaft back. (Note: You may have to get this shortened or lengthened depending on your trans of choice.)

thanks for the info! when i prowl the boneyards i take it i want a c4 or a c6 auto trans?.......should i prefer one over the other?
enjoyed the pictures of "ole red." my f100 has also spent time as a farm truck. now i am making it my camping truck. hi-rise camper shell with rear walk-thru door. beds, carpets, curtains etc......just finishing it.....haven't made the first camping trip in it yet. maybe two weeks.
the wife doesn't like the manual transmission so thought i'd see if it could be changed.
I'm glad you enjoyed the pics of my truck, it isn't anything special. Since those pics were taken... i've had my custom seats removed... they didn't fit right and added a custom built fog light bar/winch holder to the front bumper.
Most definately look for a c6 if you can. It will be the stronger of the two and will hold up much longer. The c4 isn't weak by any means and will probably do ok if it isn't in a severe use application. All else fails, beef up the c4.... they have been used behind drag race 460's...so thats got to say something about toughness.
82f100, i Answered your post down in the tranny form. Yes the Rad. will need to be changed. But if you've got a good rad. in your truck, I'd save my money on buying one for and Auto tranny and just buy a good aftermarket tranny cooler. They cost much less and do a better job at Cooling your tranny. Plus you'll be able to plum the tranny cooler to set in any spot to get plenty of cool are and have it out of the way.
