My truck has the factory v-6 and auto trans. in it now. Would like to swap the v-6 for a 302 crate motor. Will this be a simple bolt in or will i need donor parts. (82 F100 step side)
I've never seen one of those v6's or that tiny v8 they had back then. I allways thought they were a myth until a read around on here. Why not just step up to the 351? The low end torque is better, and the mileage should be about the same.
If you go the 302 route make sure it's a roller motor. A lot more options for more power. I myself love the 351W. Most 302 parts work on it and they can be built for close to the same price. Try looking for a mid 90's. I belive that's when the 351W went to a roller motor.
94 is the first official year of the 351w roller block (F4TE), but many late production year 93's (including my 93 bronco) got the roller block minus the roller gear. Unless you have a beat on a good 302 deal, I would go the 351w route.
i also have an 82 F100 with the 3.8L v6...replacing it with either a 302 or a 300(depending on what i find).. The 3.8L is a very odd engine.. alum. heads, plastic valve covers.. very very light.. poor thing has a blown head gasket, and it has no gasket, RTV or anything where the intake manifold meets the block in the rear..oops..can see down into the lifter valley..i don't know how long the previous owner ran it like this.. but i know he said it wouldn't turn over a few times because it was hydrolocked..i found water in cyl #3 but not in any of the others.. i'm thinking that cyl, and its rod bearing are probably trashed..i was thinking of saving this motor, but by the time i invest into this motor, i could have a decent 302 or 300 I6..
