Intercooler cold air pipe

Replaced the OEM pipe with an S&H kit. Driving down the highway all seems fine (175 miles) until I pull over to pass, then BOOM! Roar!
I took the next exit and pulled into a parking lot and popped the hood expecting to have to reattach the bottom of the hose. But no, the metal end that clips to the throttle body was just laying there disconnected! The clip and o-ring were still in place so I simply shoved it back on. The clip ring seated just like the first time. I’ve driven another 50 miles so far and everything seems fine, but I’m afraid to pass any traffic. A few minutes ago I accelerated from zero to seventy without issue, but I did that before, too.
I don’t know what the boost was when it blew off, but certainly no higher than during on-ramp acceleration.
Wondering if anybody else has experience with this.
Thanks.

I have not seen any threads about this issue in the last 5 years in this 6.7 forum. Not any issues on the 3 other 6.7 forums I participate.

I can relate to your skepticism on whether is is fixed or not. When I installed the Titan fuel tank, I was fearful of one fuel line not being attached properly. Happy to say it has been 5 years now and no problems, so I don't worry any more about it.

Hopefully you won't have any more issues and soon your fears will dissipate....

About 135 miles later it blew off again. I was driving with steady throttle at 35 mph.
Looking at the spring ring, it doesn’t appear to protrude inside the housing much. I took it off and bent it a bit to where the two ends overlap and then used a straight slot screwdriver to press a few of the segments down into the groove after clicking it back in place.
I’ve heard of the bottom end blowing off and even the sensor coming out, but not this.

Most do not tighten the clamps tight enough to prevent the bottom form blowing off......and some do not make sure the hose is on properly so the ridge inside the silicone tube is in the groove on the inter cooler...

Well, I am cautiously optimistic that pushing the spring clip down into the groove with a small screwdriver was the solution. After 400 more miles it hasn’t popped off again.

I think you got it now. Boy that mustve been loud as heck under the hood when it popped.

Yep!
1300 towing miles later and all appears good. Very relieved...

Glad to hear you fixed it for good. That the only problem with your H&S pipe was just the clip. I have a Rudy's kit that has the two metal bends in it. If I ever need to replace it, I'm probably going to just update and go with the single silicone hose kit like yours for sure.

Yep, that was the only problem I had with it. Veryeasy installation- I didn’t even have to touch the brake reservoir.
The molded one piece pipe fit in so easily I was worried something was wrong.

What your problem really sounds like is the "adapter" for the hose to the intake was not fully seated and the clip was not holding anything. I know when I installed mine, I had to take a rubber mallet and tap the hose adapter onto the intake. The o-ring made it a very snug and tight fit and did not easily seat at first. Once I tapped the "adapter" onto the intake, the clip fit fine. I have 20k on the Rudy's kit with no problems with clamps nor hoses losening.

Use Caution Here. I was in that camp too after having a few boots blow off on my 6.0, so then I started cranking them down.

Next thing I know, I'm on the side of the road camper in tow, at 95 degrees, with a broken band clamp at the turbo outlet because I overtightened it to the point that it stretched and cracked across a small hole in the band.

So there definitely is a thing as too tight, and its a more troubling scenario than too loose when you consider the band fails vs just blows off to then be replaced.

Lucky for me in that situation, a farmer picked me up and took me to the nearest repair shop where they had some hose clamps large enough to get me by. From then on, I carried spares with me in my 6.0.

Different situation with the 6.7, but when torquing the clamps, remember, once the spring is fully compressed, going tighter is really only going to stretch the clamp and not give you much more boot clamping.

Point taken. I'll have to throw some spares in my truck to be on the safe side.

When I swapped mine out with a Mishi I over tightened one of the clamps which broke it. Had to put one of the Ford clamps on. IMHO the torque specification on these things is not enough. After putting my truck back together from the CP4 debacle I had a boost leak. Had to torque one of the clamps down more. For a while I was on the hunt for better clamps. Wasn’t having much luck and the ones on the truck seemed to be holding so I gave up. Might be time to go back out there and start looking again.

I have about 5000 miles on my Rudy's set up and no issues. Its tourqed to about 40pounds . At peak boost I can hit about 30 pounds maybe a bit more but that's in short bursts when needed and towed 8000 pound trailer no problems. For the cost it's a great setup, just dont rush install. My only issue was the lower hose it was a PITA but I think that was due to the beer and talking with my buddy . I'm sure there are nicer setups for more cash but my thought is if it works why spend double for one that performs the same . I did add a dab of silicone to mount the sensor to eat up the slight play it did have . That's just me and my other buddy OCD though.
