Last I checked Ca, Az, and Nv get one gas and the rest of the country gets better stuff, but it's been a long time so things may have changed. If you were getting non ethanol gas on the trip that is likely it. It's possible that the higher speed is more efficient, but I find it unlikely. The extra weight in it will lower it making it more aerodynamic. As much as a roof top box looks like it should be a hindrance it might actually help aerodynamics. Throw the box on for your AZ drive and see what it does, I see that as the most likely reason. If that doesn't do it try 70MPH. If neither does it it could be the temperature, altitude, or fuel quality. Or as PrescottIce said, it likes being on vacation. If it turns out to be the box I want the model # and a photo showing where you have it placed please.
