I do restorations, have rebuilt lots of manual transmission for customers and myself. So don't dance around the facts here Give it to me straight. I have a '64 F100 with a 292. I would like to add a T170 transmission. I'm sure there are others doing this swap. Input shafts are the same length, I realize I may have to change clutch discs to match splines , etc. What about making it bolt to the '64 bellhousing? And anything else you can think about. Thanks
Yes I know the T5 is an option. I used to rebuild these and have enough spares around to build a couple transmissions. But I am interested in just the 3spd with OD, the T170. I put one in a truck I had and it was just fine. It would be fine in the '64 as well. Thanks
There is a forum on this site that deals strictly with transmissions. Maybe you get a reaction there. Is the tranny your talking about the one used in the late 70's early 80's? I've heard of bearing issues with them running dry and chewing things up.
Pete,
I can't say anything about the 292 bellhousing. I can only say I have a T170 transmission behind an FE 390-V8 and it is fine. I don't like the fact that it doesn't allow me to change the transmission fluid. I don't like the wide range between 2nd/3rd gears, but it isn't noticable unless I'm towing or going uphill. I suspect you will need to cut / obtain your driveshaft, but I'm sure you realize that.

When I replaced the 3 speed in a '79 with a T170, I didn't have to change anything, driveshaft worked as is. But certainly, with the '64, could be different, not a biggie.
There are many transmissions that have issues with the front bearing when it is run dry on oil. That is a very common culprit of manual transmission noises. If you watch the level, checking for leaks, etc . . no issues.
