my truck is a 76 F150 4x4 but im posting it here since the 208 didnt come in the 70s trucks and i figure some of you guys would swap them out for an older, stronger 205.
I'm just wondering if an NP208 will bolt into the place of an NP203? MY C6(just rebuilt) has a SLAP WORE OUT np203 behind it and id like to use the np208 in its place. MY 203 doesnt even go into low range and i messed with the linkage for about 6 hours... I have the adapter for the NP208 and stuff all the yokes yada yada shifts great minimal chain play. can i unbolt the 170lbs 203 and slap on the super light 208? or should i just find a 205?
It will bolt up. That's the easy part. It my be a different length, so your driveshafts may need lengthening or be made shorter. Then there is the shifter. You may be able to bring everything over with the 208 and it will work, or it may hit the seat, you may need a new hole in the floor, etc.
If you get everything laid out in front of you, and make several trips under the truck with a measuring tape, you may find a combination that will make all the little stuff work out. But the main part, bolting up to the tranny, will work. People like the 208 because it has such a low ratio in low range.
Everything I read said it would work but I didn't read of anything finishing a swap to or from a 208. Do I have to worry about the output shaft length?

Output shaft length on the tranny? No. All Ford transfer cases will bolt up to all the different Ford 4x4 trannies, auto, manual, etc.
Do you need to worry about the output shaft of the transfer case? Yes. It may be longer or shorter, requiring a different length rear driveshaft. The body of the transfer case may be longer or shorter, so that may change the front shaft also.
I understand about the driveshafts(let's leave that out of the picture for now) but my 208 came from a manual, and like I said my 203 is now on my c6. If I can get a t-case with a lower low than 2:1 I won't need to swap a manual in. I'll worry about the shifter when I get around to getting it in but I just want to make sure it would mechanically work before I tried moving that 170 pound beast. The 208 is so light!
Well I just bolted the 208 onto the 203 adapter and it fits perfectly. The output shaft goes in just as far on both transfercases(used my finger to measure and it's quite far in actually). The 203s adapter even has the hole in the right spot to bolt the 208 shifter on. I'm going to take them back apart and gasket them up then clean/paint(gotta be that ford blue guys, adds to your ability to beat Chevys) and then fill with fluids and put it back in the truck lol.
Just want to go ahead and say the 208 didn't fit but it bolted up fine. It would have worked it I had a body lift on my truck though. I replaced it with a 205 I got from some guy.
