I’m trying to figure out where to look or what to look for on my 66 250 camper special for a replacement hub, it’s the Dana 60 and I have 2 studs that are stripped out from what holds the axle on. Sorry if that’s not correct terminology. I was wondering if there is another source for the hubs I cannot find them myself and am seeking other sources. I was simply checking the brakes and ran into this proble. Any ideas where to look? Is there another hub from a different model that will fit?
Hi and Welcome. There are two different types of hubs possible on a 1966 F250. There is the hub that is pressed together with the brake drum so it comes off as one unit and then there is the other type where the brake drum comes off separate from the hub. The part number is different for each type. Which type do you have? Figuring that out is the first thing I would do so you can make sure you get the right part.
I agree with Christmas those bolts are there for rotational sheer strength as they are what takes the load when the axle turns, driving the hub. There is little force required to hold the axle in, they would be just as effective helicoiled.
I have thought about doing that but was not sure if it was a viable option so I will probably just do that, and also it is the presses on drum where I have to take axle out, I was calling it a full float
Axle will come right out. Make sure to get new gasket. Use locktite red on Helicoil only. You will spend more time at the store than it takes to do it.
