So in the process of rebuilding my front axle I'm almost done but the warn hubs won't install correctly. I kept the hubs off the 74 axle when I upgraded to the disc front end is that my problem? I looks as if I could have a bit of machining done and they would fit, good idea bad idea indifferent?
My '75 F250 Ranger has a Dana 44 closed knuckle drum front axle that uses external locking hubs. My crew has a Dana 44 open knuckle disc brake axle from a '79 F250 and utilizes an internal locking hub.
I had a similar issue. For me it turned out to be the big snap ring that goes around the inner diameter of the hub can be installed backwards and will not fully seat. Flipped it around and the ring snapped in fully allowing the hub to go the rest of the way in.
i had a total dipstick moment called warn just to see and the guy on the other end of the phone goes "did you try to slide the axle shaft out a little bit, there's usually about a half inch of play" it was at this moment that i realized i was a moron and apologized for wasting his time. problem solved one hub installed had some other stuff to get to before i could finish up the other side but will finish it in the a.m.
don't you just love those moments where you waste an hour trying to troubleshoot something and over look the easiest solution.......
