First time towing

So we left out on our first outing with the Ex, heading to WV on a camping trip. She pulls better than the Expedition, but I have the same vacuum leak as another poster where the AC switches from defrost to vent.
suspension needs to be sorted, she bounces a bit, like rolling waves on a boat. I also don’t have my WD dialed in properly just yet.
Transmission ran warm, I expected that with 6-8% grade. Hottest it got was 214. 6.0 trans cooler should help that. Water temp got to 244 at one point. We got stuck in “no mans land” behind a few big trucks at 45mph and didn’t have enough air flow to match the rpm. Is there an upgraded water pump available?
Overall not a bad pull, and far better than the 5.4.

What engine are you running? I Just upgraded the water pump on my '03 7.3. Here's my write up.

My apologies, I have the 6.8L V10, 4.56 gears, SCT tuner using the standard SCT towing tune. Have not done custom tunes from 5 star yet. It’s on my list.

You can probably hold off on the 6.0 cooler if that's the hottest it got. You can run 220 all day and it will be fine. Even good to 250 in short time frames. If you decide to add the 6.0 cooler anyways, get the derale inline thermostat and do it all at once. That will allow your transmission temp to get up to normal operating temps when your not towing.

Ryan, what year is your EX? The '00 and maybe some '01s didn't have the trans cooler loop inside the radiator, that would help explain those higher trans temps that you had there. I have the '05 with the radiator loop as well as the factory air to oil cooler and the highest it ever saw was 206 in over 35K towing miles with up to the 12K TT on the hitch. I have since installed the 6.0 cooler and it has dropped the towing trans temps by at least 20/25 degrees in all situations and running unloaded it still allows for 150/160 degree trans temp. 244 engine coolant temp would get my attention, that's pretty high, what t-stat did they install in the new engine? It should be 185* or by some data maybe 195* in later rigs, but I think 185* is the better choice, what kind of shape is the radiator in? With a good clean radiator, the right T-stat and proper coolant levels the engine coolant temp should stay below 215* even in stop and go Summer traffic towing heavy, I know mine does. Ensure the fan clutch is properly functioning too and that the fan shroud is fully in place.
Are you planning to visit a CAT scale on this trip to help sort out the WD setup?

I have a 2000 Ex.
no CAT scales this trip. I stopped in at one and they were 3x the price of the scales at the truck stop near our home. I won’t lie, I’m a bit of a cheap *******...I’ll wait till we get home and save some cash. If I’m not mistaken, I need three different weigh ins?
we arent towing super heavy. Maybe 7k lbs. that tells me I have some things to sort out. We’ll get her there.

OK, '00 most likely doesn't have the in radiator trans cooling loop, a decent addition to the ATF cooling system that later years did have.
How much did the CAT scale want for a trip over the scale pads? Typically they are $12 for the first pass and an additional $2 for each additional pass the same day, so $ 16 for the 3 needed weights, more of course if you start adjusting and reweighing.
1. Weight with EX and TT with WD tensioned as you normally travel.
2. Weight with EX and TT with WD hitched but all of the tension removed from the hitch spring bars.
3. Weight of the EX without the trailer.
All weights should be taken packed as for a trip with everyone onboard that would be for a trip ideally.

Actually, it was a deletion that had been in automatic equipped vehicles since at least the 1965 Mustang that I had.
For some reason the radiator trans cooler was deleted in "1999 and the first half year 2000 F-250, F-350, F-450, F-550, & Excursions" according to Mark Kovalsky.
I guess they felt the aux trans coolers would be sufficient.

it only got hot when climbing that grade behind the big truck. I was at 45 mph, rpm was about 3500. I’ll have coolant levels checked, and new t-stat installed. Radiator looks good as well. Anything else to check?

What was the coolant temp running when you were cruising at speed in free open air?

That is about where it should be. Inspect the fins on the cooling stack behind the grille, make sure it isn't blocked by bugs or debris and that the fins all seem fairly straight. Make sure that the fan shroud is fully in place, the shroud is important to channel the air the fan moves through the radiator. Verify that the fan clutch is functioning, did you hear the fan engage when it was running hot, it should be be audible when it does. Over time some of these clutches go bad and don't drive the fan properly when needed, I'm dealing with the same situation on my little Suzuki truck currently.

I didn’t hear anything, but with my mom, and wife in the vehicle...there was tons of conversation going on. I was the only one watching gauges and worrying about readouts. 😂😂

Hellwig rear sway bar eliminated my handling issues when towing with my excursion. Highly recommend it.
