Hey guys, my dad has a 69 F250 Camper Special 2wd with a 390 and C6. He came across someone selling a Dana 60 for a "pre 75" Ford. How can we tell if this will work in his truck? The guy wants $500 but I think that price is a little high...
May as well just find a new frame! The swap from personal experience is a PITA. The 2wd frame is different than the 4wd frame. I did mine but used aftermarket parts and 2002 axles. Start looking at 4x4 swap threads and you will quickly realize a frame swap is in order.
Frame swap isn't 100% bolt in either, still have the bed issue and narrow frame
500 is very pricey. 150 and only if I needed it. Find a donor 4x4. I have seen 67-79 4x4 frames and axles for 500 to 1500.
If you are going to fab the 2wd frame might as well start out with a better differential. I think the superduty axles are affordable and popular for axles swaps in the 4 wheeling crowd.
Closed knuckle axles are almost worth nada. If you gotta have it, offer him $50. As ND says, look for a 76-77 D60or D44 low pinion open knuckle with disc brakes, or a 77.5-79 D44/60 with high pinion with and disc brakes. With the 2wd frame, you have the big hulking cross member to get around. Best would be a later model frame swap with a rolling chassis if you can weld and fabricate.
