I drive a 95 f250 7.3 2wd. Had the transmission rebuilt after buying the truck last December, and it has been riding like a dream. Recently I have had an issue with it that I know even know where to start troubleshooting.
Randomly the transmission will kick down to first and then back to the appropriate gear, some times once, sometimes 2 or 3 times in a row. Just today it kicked down to first and stayed there, until I pulled over, put it in park, and then shifted to drive again. At all other times is shifts at the same points and with the same level of firmness that it had after the rebuild. It has a transgo tugger kit and sonnax valves. The truck throws no codes (my reader will pull DTC) and the overdrive light has not flashed even once.
Really hoping this is an electrical issue, because the rebuild just went out of warranty.
Where should I start looking, and what are the first few steps to do so? Thank you.
Damn, really? If that's the part commonly called a mlps on these, then I just replaced it like 6 months ago. The part that's held on with 3 bolts, you remove the two one either side, and then the center, drivers side of tranny?
Yes, it is almost certainly the TRS, aka MLPS. Those sensors were notoriously unreliable in those years. There was a later version available that worked much better. Aftermarket sensors seem to fail more often.
Yeah, shamefully enough I slapped an aftermarket one in because I live around the corner from an oreilly. I'll order a better one and install it this evening. Thanks all.
Weird, none of the three near me carry any. Fordman67, rockauto is the first place I checked, but they let me down for once. All I found was standard motor and other aftermarket parts.
