2003 150 steering pump play ?
Yesterday my 2003 F150 5.4 tritan began to make a pretty bad sound emitting from the serpentine belt area. At first I though its probably the water pump but after listening some more and observing that the sound is more like an external noise (bearing / pulley), I am rethinking the water pump. So I removed the belt for closer look, and found that the only sort of sloppy pulley is the power steering pump pulley. It moves around significantly compared with the other ones (water pump, tensioner, alternator etc). My question is.... how much play is normal for the p.s. pump? The play it has is lateral not vertical, if thats the correct description...iow, the pulley shaft moves in / out slightly (maybe 3mm).
Thanks for any help from this great forum.

try this ...leave the Serpentine belt off and start it to see if the noise goes away , then your on the right path. IF it does not go away deeper digging is required
