Brief synopsis. 2001 Escape 3.0 4x4. Replaced transmission with a used unit. Drove - O/D off light flashing. Know that means code and potential problem. Take it to a local trans shop - as I got no codes on my reader. He got a P0732 and a P0705. He said 2-4 band bad, rec'd replacement. AS ai read the millions of posts about the OD off light flashing, and as I drove the Escape home contemplating crawling under it AGAIN to replace the trans, I took it out on the highway. As I had read, if the 2-4 band is broke, it shifts from 1-3 then to OD. I also read that the ESS could be misreading, also the TRS. My question is, at 70 MPH on the highway, I was right at 3000 RPMs. I have found several who thought that RPM was OK, others say it is too high - it seems high to me - fluid is good and not burnt - (changed it when installing and old fluid was not burnt). Any thoughts?
A broken 2-4 band will cause a P0732/P0734 code pair. The good news, if there were any for the CD4e, is that it is possible to replace the band without dropping the transmission. How-to videos on YouTube.
If the TCL is flashing, then OD is probably disabled. If the band is broken, it's disabled anyway and you'll only have 1st and 3rd gears. In 3rd, the engine will be running at least 3K RPMs at 70 mph.
Thanks for that info! I looked, and at this point I have nothing to lose - I ordered the band from Rock auto for 12.99 - hardest part looks to be getting the pump off. It certainly is a lot less work than dropping the trans, though. I will update when I get it going but thanks for the heads up!
thanks to projectSHO89 - escape is up and running and at 2100 RPM at 72 MPH! I cancelled the rockauto order and found the band and o-ring locally for 26 bucks - took me about 3.5 hours to complete - thanks for the heads up! Had always kinda shyed away from going internal on an automatic transmission. Videos helped! Pump was a bit of a pain to get out - but otherwise much easier than dropping it! Thanks again!
