Hello all, For the search natzi's I have looked and found nothing that was truly helpfull.
Today I had a 50 mile trip, normally the temp doesn't get much past the o in normal, even in 90*, it's about 55 here today, and I was at the (a) in normal. I had heat, so it is pumping, I checked the fluid and did have to add some, but it was not a huge amount. It never overheated, but was pretty darn close, I know to check for crud behind the AC condenser which I will do after work, but I think it might be my fan clutch, it could just be me, but it appears that the fan is spinning slower than what seems normal. Is there a way to test it without removing it from the vehicle?
Engine off: try spinning the fan by hand. If it doesn't spin - seems like it's locked the clutch is gone. If it spins freely, the clutch is also gone. If it has a bit of resistance to it - you should be OK. My first thought was the T-stat too. If you haven't changed it in a few years, it's probably time.
The temp sender for the temp gauge on my F-150 began to read low a couple of years ago. Replaced it an now get readings closer to normal. Note that on my 89 this is not the one mounted near the T-stat housing(computer data only), but the one on the side of the block toward the back of the engine.
When my clutch fan failed there was a roaring noise at highway speeds as the fan was engauged all the time. It also puked fluid onto the hot engine which stank.
Thanks for all the assistance, The clutch is gone, it's not turning at idle speed as fast as it should, I will be doing the T-Stat as well as a precaution. I got the truck a year ago, and I am not really sure what the guy before me actually did. I am thinking maybe waterpump as well, since I will have the fan and clutch off anyway. Is anyone running an electric fan on one of these? If so, how much was the retrofit, and how well do they work?
My fan clutch also took a crap so I took it off the truck, then I popped off the spring on the front, then I took a hammer and a chisel and removed the tin plate, Next I removed two of the bolts that hold the fan blades to the fan clutch, then I took a 5/16 drill and drilled all the way thru the bolt holes where the bolts are removed and installed longer nuts and bolts which permanetly locked the fan on. Use opposing bolt holes to maintain balance on the fan or you could drill out all four. Either way will work.
Here's an update. I got my truck up to temp, as well as my wifes '92 explorer. With the engine off, I turned the fans by hand in both and received the same resistance. I have intention this weekend to change the T-Stat and the water pump. Now here's a couple questions I have.
All the times I ever had a t-stat go bad, it was either full open, or full closed. As an educated guess, I would have to say it seems as though the flow is restricted. This also could be due to the water pump not turning to speed. I will update ya’ll when those items are installed. I will also be flushing the block and rad hoping to wash any crap out of the water jacket.
