ICM ground issues

I retrieved 224 codes on my 2.3 ranger.I removed the ICM,it tested bad. Upon installing a new ICM i’ve Been unable to get the truck running. I have tightened the 3 bolts holding it tight.I understand the ICM has an internal ground and the lower left bolt is crucial.I have connected a secondary ground from battery neg to the lower left bolt.I am fairly sure it’s a ground issue. I probed the orange/red wire from the bottom ICM connector to battery pos. With koeo I got no meter reading.I have confirmed proper power to the ICM as well as having the new ICM tested at auto zone.Anyone have any ideas?

I see you don't have any replies yet, so I'll see if I can get things started.

Good idea to have posted the trouble code, but Is this P0224 code for your 93 OBD-1 equipped Ranger ?

If so, its for a "Erratic" IDM input to the processor. SO, is this a OEM, or aftermarket part & did you have the replacement IDM bench tested before you left the store with it? I've seen bad new parts right out of the box.

Have you checked the distributor shaft for looseness? If the shaft bearing is worn it can cause the IDM to output a noisy, intermittent signal that could confuse the ECM about suppling proper ground switching to fire the coill.

If the battery to engine, or body grounds are corrupt, like loose or corroded, it can cause mischief

Some initial thoughts for consideration, let us know what you find.

After testing the #7 orange/red wire at the base of the connector. I discovered I was not getting an internal ground coming out of the new ICM.I tested the #1 red wire and confirmed it does have power to the ICM. I removed the ICM again and took it to a different auto parts store and again it tested good on their tester.I am at my wits end trying to figure this out.the truck set a 224 code and was giving me coil trouble.it had been giving me starting and stalling problems which made me pull the codes.does anyone know why the #7 wire is not grounding?the last time it ran I brought the truck home one evening and shut it off and the next morning I had a no start condition. I removed the original ICM and it tested bad.

Ok good trouble shooting & feedback, so lets think about this some more. The ICM bench tests ok, has power to it on the vehicle, but no output. There are a couple of other things that need to be checked as outlined in this trouble shooting scenario here if your talking about your 93 Ranger 3.0L, https://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford...ring-diagram-2 & here https://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford...module-tests-1.

While you had the ICM out for testing, did you also check the distributor shaft play for worn bearings corrupting the pip sensor output & have you tested for crankshaft & pip switching signals, even if you don't have trouble codes for them?

More thoughts for consideration, don't give up, keep looking & the problem will likely become evident.

It’s a 93 with a 2.3 obd1 coil packs, no distributor. I’ve been on easy diagnostics website and the number 2 test for a no start condition on the ICM is checking the fore mentioned ground . If I am not mistaken the orange and red #7 wire also acts as the ground for CPS?

Ok, so its a 93 but it's Not a 3.0L, it's a 2.3L, so it has a Different ignition system, so is why I kept asking about the year & engine your trouble shooting. I had looked in your past posts & saw it was a 3.0L, so thats why I was referring to a distributor check.

Easy Diagnostics has a 4banger trouble shooting page, so I think I understand you've found it here. https://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford...sensor-tests-1, so now maybe I'm on the same page & singing from the same hymnal with you!!! lol

On the dual coil pack 2.3L 4banger ignition, only one coil pack is fired to Start the engine, so lets keep that in mind as the trouble shoot proceeds.

As I understand it, your now on Page-2, Diagnostic-step-2 here https://easyautodiagnostics.com/ford...nsor-tests-2#2 ?
