Quoted from Ford Fuel Injection.com:

"Get a length of wire that can connect the STI to the negative battery terminal or body ground."

Any length of wire than can be inserted into the Test connector and a ground or negative terminal on the battery.

Here is a pin-out of the EEC Self Test Plug

Courtesy of subford.

Usually I find the pins on the test plug are corroded when my code reader does not read out anything.

You may want to check that the STI wire going to the EEC is in good shape. I was in the middle of diagnosing a problem when a 2nd attempt at pulling codes just didn't work. My reader was on, but it wasn't running the test. It turned out that the STI wire was corroded about 2 inches behind the connector and it took just snipping off that 2 inches and crimping a standard spade connector on it, but it worked. But then, the STI wire is separate from the EEC test plug too, so I don't know if that will work as well with your truck.

ST1 is the single connector right next to the Self Test plug (aka ST0)

And both of them are next to the driver side hood hinge.

For reference from Ford Fuel Injection.com

ST1 is the connector that gets grounded which in turn tells the PCM to start the Self Test sequence.

i hit the sti with a wire and put that on the negative terminal. i did the blink thing and got 3 codes, i did it over and over trying to make sure i got the number of blinks right.

63 - throttle positioner circuit below minimum voltage
66- mass air flow circuit below minimum voltage

and code 36 i think, but its not on the list?

as for the first 2 codes... where doi start

Your truck should display three digit codes. I know of a few that have verified they get 2 digit codes on their 1994 trucks. In your case the first code is most likely 636/636, the codes are displayed twice. 636 indicates the Transmission Oil Temperature sensor is out of range during the test. I suspect you did not warm up the engine and transmission before starting the tests.

got 111, 172, and 225 with a codescout 2500.

koed 111 System checks OK

memory 172 (R,M) O2 sensor not switching - system is or was lean - Single, Right or Rear HO2S - Fuel control

225 (R) Knock sensor not tested (ignore if not pinging) - KS

when i got the truck the owner said it needed a new o2 sensor so im gonna take a guess and say i should replace this? will the codes go away after i replace them or do i have to clear them?

why do i get code 111 if it says the system checks ok

Did you perform both KOEO test, and KOER test? You need to perform KOEO to pull codes and write down both KOEO and CM codes, and then run the KOER test and check codes. Follow these instructions.

The first part of the tests when checking for codes is referred to as Key On-Engine Off (KOEO). The PCM runs a set of tests then displays a System Pass code of 111 or if there is a failure, what the error code(s) is. The next set of codes displayed are from Continuous Memory. These are the stored codes of something happening in the past.

You will need to clear the codes from CM in order have a new starting point. This can be done by removing the ground jumper as the codes are being displayed.

i did the koeo first, got 111, then it said memory 172

then it said do you want to do koer test, and i did. have to rev to 2000, turn my wheels, turn od off..

got code 172, and 225...

i still need to clear my codes again? to get this right? you dont think these are the ones setting off my cel?

i rented this code reader. so to clear them can i remove the jumper wire while my truck is doing the standard blink test (i dont have the scan tool anymore)

Code 172 should only be happening in the KOER tests. Not sure it would show up in Continuous Memory. If you are getting this code it could be something as simple as an exhaust leak upstream of the O2 sensor. Other causes could be low fuel pressure or a vacuum leak.

Code 225 is most likely caused by not blipping the throttle enough for the knock sensor (assuming you have a 5.0 or 4.9L engine) to detect some pre-ignition/pinging

Agreed. I concur the sensor is probably ok. I would suggest first checking for vacuum leaks around your maf, throttle body, intake manifold, and also exhaust before o2 sensor. All of these will cause a lean condition. Don't worry about the "right side" this is the default for a one oxygen sensor setup.

the hose that comes off of the rubber intake that goes into the oil filler neck (oil breather?) is a little loose around the intake. this isnt considered vacum though. does this need to be tight?

It's probably not helping any. If your truck uses Mass Airflow (MAF) it would be a source of unmetered air, that could cause a lean condition.
