I finally realized I need mental help. Sunday I was on craigslist and saw an ad for the 58,four wheel drive It had only been listed for 2 hrs. My first reaction was NO step away from the computer and I did . Went outside started on my project list, 3 hours later I am calling the person for the ad. An hour later I am headed to Vegas to look at it, Pretty obvious on what happened. One truck load full of boxes and parts. 2 days later another truck load of parts and another truck and trailer to haul her home.
The truck is a 2 wheel drive but the previous owner converted it to 4 wheel. Cab is in bad shape no use to me but somebody that would need patch panels might need it. 4 doors, complete front clip and boxes and boxes of parts. Most of the mechanical parts are duplicated. The P.O. had 2 trucks and parted the other out. 223 4 speed, extra 9 inch. The bed and hood are in great shape. This transaction had to be done by Wednesday the latest so I took today off and took care of it. I haven't had time to go through all the boxes. I think I need the lever to switch to 4 wheel? I see the hubs are free wheeling? Driveshafts are all there with transfer case. parts are resting in a 51 plmouth that was cut up. 10 boxes of parts and 3 shop manuals
Can somebody give me info on the four wheel drive stuff? especially the front.

Meh, don't feel too lonely. Had it been in my area at a decent price, I would have jumped on it.
Speaking of mental health, I am a Ford man. But awhile back I bought a '59 Chevy panel van. Why?, I'm not sure. I still think my '60 Ford panel van has more appeal.

What kind of info are you looking for regarding the front end? Should be a closed knuckle Dana 44, the t case appearsto be a model 24 which would be correct.
So is a Dana 44 correct for say a 59? Maybe you need a better pic of the knuckle. Also do I need the shift linkage? I know you can manually turn the hubs. Maybe ND can come up with a pic the linkage. Need to find somebody that has one. Excuse my ignorance, just haven't dealt with 4 wheel
If they did it the easy way they would have used a 59-60 donor 4x4 truck. That would have donated the factory closed knuckle Dana 44 and model 24 t case, along with the rear lift blocks ifa 1/2 ton had those. I don't have a 1/2 ton so I can't speak to the rear blocks. Front driveshaft, and a "short shaft" that connects the transmission to the transfer case. Plus a shifter and linkage to control the t case. Don't get to worked up about the linkage, if you don't have it I think it would be fairly easy to make.
By East coast standards the cab looks useable. Looks like all factory 4x4 parts. I used a wrecked factory '59 4x4 to convert a '60 short bed to 4x4 years ago, everything pretty much just bolts right in. Lift blocks on the rear axle.
Today I called the guy that was handling the sale of the truck and he is sure that he has the shifter and rods that connect to the transfer case are at his house. He also has another 4 speed that I need to pick up. At the time of the sale there were 2 jeeps and parts spread out everywhere. So yes flh06 I am keeping the 4 speed just not sure what the other trans is. I checked the transfer case today D3TA7A-195AA 205 18 Really hard to see the numbers. Is this a 73? Funny you ask that. Just yesterday I was on the sleeper er creeper and was evaluating what was there and what wasn't. Got to looking at the transfer case and crossmember. At first it looked like it was factory installed. After looking at it seems they got the crossmember and split it in half (width wise) so the original crossmember could still be used for strength, In other words they sandwiched it together. I will try to get pics after the sun goes down. So I am thinking that they used a crossmember from the 73-77. BTW thanks ND, you r a wealth of info.

I have a 1957 that I am converting to 4 wheel drive and was thinking of making modifications to the crossmember from a ‘78 F250 with married NP 205 or ‘75 F250 with divorced NP205, I have both.
I got a few shots of the cross member. It needs more modification to make it solid. Better mounting flanges to secure it better. Could have been a lot worse so I feel fortunate. It also has the blocks in the rear diff. I have a really nice cab for this one. Just need to go pick it up. see how they split the late model cross member gives you a better idea. Does your cross member look like this? The cross member at the bottom of the frame has no point of attachment

I don’t understand why they would split it.
I think it would be easier to remove the factory piece and make minor modifications to the donor piece.
It definitely needs some ears welded on to be able to bolt it to the frame. It might be better to find a new cross member and do it right.
