I'm planning on putting a 5.0 EFI motor in a 1967 F100 truck, I don't want to mess with the computer and all that stuff I would like to run it with a carb and no computer. My question is, what all do I need to change ? Only the intake and carb, or what else ?
Intake, carb, distributer system,(go with the duraspark II system). Remember, fuel+air+spark= HP! You will need to remove the crossover pipe on the heads and plug the EGR port on the exhaust manifolds, unless your using headers (solves exhuast port problem only). The dura spark system can be had at a junk yard from any late 70's to mid 80's V8 powered car or truck. You will need the 5.0L specific dizzy though. What year is the 5.0L EFI engine? If it is a 93 or later EFI motor, the dizzy gear must be steel, otherwise, cast iron. When the roller cams came out, the dizzy gear changed to match. Crown Vic's of the 80-84 variety are plentiful and can be had cheaply. 5.0l thunderbirds of the same age also ( alittle more rare though) asre good too. Mustangs also will work, but good luck there.
I'm assuming that your keeping the serpentine belt? If not, you will need a different timing cover, waterpump, pulleys, and brackets for the accessories your going to run. The EFI water pump is a reverse rotation. Summit sells a timing cover that lets you keep the reverse rotation WP (and the serp belt), and allows the use of a mechanical fuel pump. $110.
Good luck,

Hey fishin, Thanks for the info, The car I found is an 1986 crown vic with the 5.0 HO with auto trans. About the water pump, can I get a new one that turns the other way? Or is it easier to change the cover, the belt is OK to keep... Not sure what all the dura spark includes with it. Is that to keep the electronic ignition without having the computer ? I want to try to keep this engine as simple as possible. (keep it where I can work on it!) What in the world is a dizzy???
Thanks JC
dizzy = distributrer, round and round and round and round...... getting dizzy yet?? LOL.
You may have the dura spark system on the '86. Does it have a silver box with about 7 or 8 wires coming from it? or do you have a flat rectangular grey plastic module attached to the dizzy w/ 4 wires coming out of it? Does the dizzy have the vacuum advance diaphram on it? if it has that, you got a dura spark! How do you know it is a H.O.? Was the '86 Vic a cop car? If you have CFI, (looks like a carb, but with a fuel injector in each barrel), I believe you have the duraspark also. If you have a large aluminum intake and fuel rails, you have a MFI (or Speed Density) injection which would have the computer controled ignition and no vacuum advance. The Dura-spark II system has a vacuum advance distributer, a ignition module (usually mounted on the fender well), a coil, and the wiring. Do a search for 'duraspark' on FTE, you should be able to find a diagram of the components and how they hook up. The dizzy has a reluctor wheel in it that sends a signal (based on crank? postion) to the ignition module that triggers the coil and send the high voltage energy back to the rotor and cap, and to the spark plug.
If you want, you can keep the serpentine belt and the reverse rotation WP. But to run a mechanical fuel pump, you will have to get the summit timing cover, or suffer and run low pressure electric pumps for the carb. It is alot easier to run the electrics, but I don't trust'em. Mechanical pumps rarely go bad. If you use the electrics, you can keep everything on the front of the engine with out having to tear it apart to put the timing cover in. Otherwise, you'll need all the things i mentioned in my first post. or a brand new serp belt setup for the things you want to run, BIG $$$$.
I know it's a HO because it has 5.0 HO on the top of the intake, it's the same as the engine in my 93 mustang. OK I know what the dura spark is now. So, If I get this 1986 crown vic with the 5.0 EFI, I will need to change to the dura spark ignition (Dist., box and coil, swap the intake to a 4bbl. intake and add a carb ?
Does the dura spark need to be wired to a power source or does it work just on vacuum? And also the timing cover...
The distributer uses vacuum to advance the timing only. The igniton box needs power and the coil does too. If the engine in the crown vic looks like your 93, It may not have duraspark. Check and make sure. (grey module on distributer base = computer controlled timing, silver box on fender well = dura spark)
