My parking brake must be pushed almost to the floor to. engage. What is the proper way to adjust it and how far should it be pushed to start the engagements? Thanks Sandy
About two k on them and I adjusted them properly at the time. So basically new. Drums parts and shoes. also here in the flat country I rarely use the parking brake and just noticed it yesterday.
When you did the brakes did you replace the cables that run back into the backing plates that operate the parking brake? If you didn't replace them, did you check to make sure they worked freely?

Well if those cables don't move freely they may not release the parking brake completely. They will likely release enough so you don't notice, but the shoes will still rub against the drums and tend to wear the shoes slightly. I can only guess this is what happened in your case.
Those cables almost always tend to bind up if not used regularly and maybe even kept lubed and maintained. My bottom line here is I would make sure those cables work freely inside their housings or replace them.
IMHO, it is worth replacing the two rear parking brake cables as the springs age they don't fully disengage causing the shoes to lightly rub causing premature wear, excess dust and poor fuel economy. A malfunctioning auto-adjuster can cause the same.
As far as adjustment... The newer trucks don't have any adjustment as far as I know. The assembly in the cab takes up the slack and that's it. It is set up to cover a range of travel as the shoes/drums wear and they probably set it to be looser than tighter to help avoid the problems listed above.

I just loosened the adjustment nut on the equalizer and the passenger side cable is moving freely. The driver side does not move and I can't pull it. I can try loosening the nut some more and see if it frees up or ???. I don't mind replacing the cables but don't want to unless necessary. When I was racing motorcycles we used a cable lube tool to lube. Forces lube down cable. Would this be an option. I don't have one anymore but I can get one. Sandy

I use my park brake every day ( 5 speed) and it started acting as you describe. Checked the rear cables and one was stuck changed both out and the problem went away.
It won't cost you much to try. Lube it, work it, and see if it comes free. I wouldn't count on it to last if you succeed... but that is just me looking into an imaginary crystal ball.
If you do replace the cables Ford put out a TSB that re-routed the cables to avoid binding on the spring perch and adding some rubber to cut down on chafing the cable cover.
I loosened the adjustment nut and was able to move the cable some. About 3/4 of the way down on the PB I am getting clicks now whereas before it had to go to the floor. I am going to loosen the nut some more and see what happens. Thanks for the heads up on the TSB, I'll check it out. Thanks everyone. Sandy
I was finally able to get the cable to move about two inches. After I used the PB yesterday I noticed the brake smell from the driver side when I got home.
After the adjustment and I got the cable to release some, I took it for a drive and everything is fine as long as I don't use the PB. I will need to replace the cables if I want to use the PB or release it manually if I do. Thanks Sandy
