KC 300 wheel on exhaust side is wider and blades are deeper.
This is going to drive the compressor more consistently.
TJLongworth, what compressor wheel do you have?
I have the KC drop in turbine and compressor wheel in the stock housing. My experience with it has been limited but doesn't seem to match up with TJ's description. Not towing and with a stock tune it has several pounds more boost across the range along with very noticeably better acceleration once it gets spooled up. The downside is that it spools slowly compared to the stock turbo and I attribute that to the weight of the turbine wheel. It's more than twice as heavy as the stock wheel and that seems like it will affect the time it takes to get the turbo up to speed. My digital scale maxes at 2,000 grams and the turbine maxed it out so I don't know exactly what it weighs. Stock turbine wheel weighs about 1,000 grams. EGT's seem to be a bit higher. So far I've only towed a tandem axle flatbed with a tractor on it and it seems to work OK although I haven't been on a long trip. Haven't logged the fuel mileage yet, although I'm sure it's not better and it seems worse but that's just subjective so far.
Thats very interesting !!! I find it interesting that 2 trucks can have totally different results. Do you have any bigger injectors ? do you have the 1.0 or 1.15 housing ?
I was in the same position recently. I ended up deleting the evbp with a deleted pedestal and turbo outlet piece from ebay. I bought a billet wheel, 360 bearing rebuild kit, and 1.0 exhaust housing. I have been happy with this set up every since. Would love to upgrade further but this is good for now
Thanks for posting this. I went back and checked my notes and my stock turbine wheel weighed about 500 grams and the new one from KC Turbo weighed something over 1,000 grams. I went by memory in my post above and it turns out I accidentally added 1,000 grams to the measurement. But...there is still a 500 gram or so discrepancy in weight between your wheel and mine. I will weigh my old one again tomorrow.
Following... Bryan, that turbo setup is what I was looking at getting whenever funds allow.... let us know what the butt dyno says, because that's really all that matters imo..
