Hello,
recently purchased a 1976 f150 with 360. it had sat, so carb was rough...i've since had that rebuilt. However there seems to be a misfire, and not always. not sure if its my imagination but seems to act up when the engine is warm. one thing that does concern me is the 2 centre plug wires touch (those 2 spark plugs face angle in towards each other)...any thoughts?
thanks in advance,
Now when you say a misfire you mean the engine starts running rough or you hear a loud bang/pop and then it goes back to normal? If it starts running rough i would say check the obvious plugs wires etc.. The plugs shielding touching unless exposed internally isn't really a major concern. If you hear a loud pop then that tells me your carb needs better adjusting or you might have an issue with the carb.
Thanks for the response. yes it runs very rough and you can hear it in the exhaust that its not running correctly on all cylinders. the carb was rebuilt by an older gentlemen who set it to factory specs (hes been doing this for 40+ years) so I think the carb is more or less running correctly. is it possible the coil is acting sporadic?
So when the motor is not at optimum temperature it runs fine but when it gets to optimum temperature it starts to run rough. It could be a vacuum issue it could be an issue with the coil not as likely. I would check that all your vacuum lines are on i would get it to optimum temp and use a mechanics stethoscope to listen and check to see if you can determine if its misfiring from 1 or multiple cylinders.
The firing order is correct...however I have not touched the timing, nor do I think it has been tampered with...however I was hoping to check that out as well, thanks!
Always check engine compression first thing, it's best to know what you actually have to work with from a basic mechanical or engine health standpoint. Engine vacuum test will reveal other problems too. If the engine is pooched you want to know that before spending much time or money on it.
