4wd question

As I look at part numbers, it seems as though the front cv axle halfshafts are the same for 2wd and 4wd models for my 2001. I am putting in a rebuilt auto trans - but when I pulled out the transfer case it’s all messed up. Can I run the trans without the transfer case attached? Will the halfshafts fit? I would just take out the rear driveshaft?

I have a Tribute 2.0 2WD and a Tribute 3.0 4WD - the cv shafts are the same but the RH intermediate shaft is different as it has a shoulder further outboard for the transfer case seal.

You can certainly remove the transfer case and swap the intermediate shaft but I’m not sure what happens with the transfer case drive from the gearbox, I’d expect there will be a gap once the xfer box is removed, not sure if that is covered by a plate on the 2WD or whether the CD4E casing is different there. The 2.0 has a different casing to the 3.0 CD4E anyway as the starter mounts differently and here in NZ a 3.0 with 2WD was never an option so I havent seen any casings...
