I have a 2001 f250 5.4 4x4. I know it has open differentials and the gear ratio is 3.73. I want to install a spartan locker in the front and rear differentials. The differential tags are not legible. I believe the rear is a 10.5/35 spline and the front is Dana 60/35 spline. Does any one know if this is correct or a way to find out without the differential tags?
Why do you want to install a Spartan lunchbox locker?
I have one in the front of my K5 Blazer and a Auburn Limited slip in the rear.
I can tell you from driving it, the locker in the front IS NOT a good idea. It wants to push instead of turning. I've used it in soft sand and hard packed roads. In the sand it pushes really bad. On roads, it wants to push but if there is enough traction, then it will ratchet. But if it looses any traction, it will not ratchet and makes it harder to turn.
I'm looking at replacing mine with a eaton trutrack or a auburn limited slip.
A Spartan may be OK in the rear but will still be hard to turn if there is not enough traction for the tires to grip when turning to allow it to ratchet.
Are you sure you looked in the right place for the front axle tag? it should be above the web to the right of the input (drive) shaft. Unlike the rear tag, there should be no reason to ever remove it as it is not fastened with a cover bolt or any other fastener that is removed for servicing and should be well protected from damage, except perhaps corrosion.

I can see both tags front and rear they are just not legible

Oh, that's bad! Can a dealership clear this up using the VIN? I sure would ask because they have access to data bases the rest of us can only dream about!
Perhaps your experience should be a warning to the rest of us to note the information on the various service tags in our owner's manuals and/or another safe location!
Maybe someone can post a picture of the main differences between the Dana 50 and Dana 60? Or do they look the same from the outside? I'm curious as well. I was told that my '01 has 1 ton springs in teh rear. So now I'm wondering if it might have the 60 up front.

Dana 60 with have the number "248" cast in the web on the center chunk. (248mm ring gear)
Dana 50 will have "229" cast in the web.
Also they say the pinion nut on the D50 is smaller than the D60's 1 5/16".
Or check the B.O.M. number from the axle tube on dana's site. www2.dana.com/expert/
A Spartan locker works great in the front, I have one in my Jeep and I can turn it with one finger in 4x4. If you have the Dana 50 they don't make a Spartan locker for it but they do make a Lock Right locker which is the same thing. The rear is a 35 spline Ford 10.5 and before you order a drop in locker you have to make sure you have the 2 pinion open carrier, they don't make them for the 3 pinion carriers, so if that's what you have you will have to go with a full case locker like a Detroit or Grizzly locker.
00t44e. I can turn the wheel as well with 1 finger. But my Blazer will tend to push and keep going straight in the sand or any soft road as there is not enough traction for the tires to grip to allow the spartan to ratchet and allow the inner tire to spin at a slower rate when turning.
I guess it all depends on what surface he is going to be driving on when in 4x4.

Going to check for 248 or 229 on the cast, thanks!!

I was looking at the full case grizzly locker, thanks for the info!!!

A little bit of everything back in the woods, the beach, and obviously on the road
I had mine up on a lift last night to change the oil, so I took a good look around on the axle trying to find numbers and found nothing. I did find a tag on the diff cover but couldn't read the numbers very well. But I found a paper tag on the back of the axle tube. I punched the number into google and it came up with another forum and they said it was a D50.
The numbers I ran were the 1C34-3002-LA
I also found that the d60 wasn't installed in the F250's until '03.
I've been trying to find out which axle I have as well as I need to replace the inner seals. Mine has a slow leak.

While the spartan locker is a inexpensive alternative to replacing the carrier, if you have the funds, I'd go with a eaton trutrack or something similar for what you describe as where you would be driving. I think the Spartan would do great if rock crawling and such, but backwoods roads and beach sand I don't think it's the best choice. But that's just from my experience in running one in those types of areas.
On a desert racing forum I am on, I asked the question about the front and all of the replies I got was to ditch the Spartian in the front and go with a true track type of LSD or open diff.
