I am trying to help a friend with a 96 F350 7.3ltr.
The starter went out while we were trying figure out why the engine would not fire.
The fuel filter is full of fuel, the ICP sensor is unplugged, the engine did turn over slowly at first. He thought it needed new batteries so he installed new batteries.
The starter was cranking and quit. We removed the starter and had it tested. We installed a new starter.
The engine won't even crank now. What else could it be?

Started relay on the fender could be bad. Can you jump the lugs and make it crank?

edit*. Just for the sake of hahas, my auto correct changed my comment to “Can you jump the pugs and make it start”. Totally different meaning!

Robby's 7.3

Turning the ignition switch the solenoid doesn't close and the starter won't spin.

Using a screwdriver to jump across the lugs the starter cranks the engine strong and fast.

And the engine won't fire, no smoke of any color visible out the exhaust.

I purchased a new solenoid installed it but didn't solve the no cranking problem. So using a test light discovered that we have lost power to the S terminal on the solenoid.
This truck is a 5 speed manual. I looked for a neutral safety switch but couldn't find it.
The wire that energizes the solenoid, where does it connect to transfer power to the Solenoid?

On the other hand since I have been trying to figure out why the engine won't fire, I removed the filter and applied about 20 psi to the fuel tank. Pushing fuel to the filter housing filling it so as to make sure that there is no air in the part of the fuel system.

If I jumped the lugs to crank the engine and sprayed starter fluid in the intake will this damage anything. I just cranked the engine but won't use starter fluid unless it is safe.

I plugged the ICP found oil in the electrical contacts.

Engine does not fire.

Ign switch could have taken a dump. PCM or IDM relay or fuse can fail.

Stop jumping both big lugs. Just put 12V to the small one to engage starter.

Honesty it sounds like you guys are causing more harm than good. Consider having it towed to a qualified Diesel repair shop.

The neutral safety switch is on the clutch push rod. You must have the clutch depressed for it to crank. You can check the NSS with a multi-meter to see if there is continuity between the terminals with the clutch depressed. Just need to know which ones to check because it also functions as a cruise control shut off.
