ranger stalls while stopping/steering

i have a 2000 ranger 4x4 offroad. 3.0 v6. 5 speed manual transmission

this is an intermittent problem and happens every week or so.
when im driving at any speed and i am comeing to a stop or turning, the engine dies. its scary as heck when im turning cause i lose the power steering and have had a couple neer misses. its under warranty still and ive taken it to the dealer 3 times for this. they have not found the problem. some times ill even have the clutch completely down, and it still stalls.

i tried searching, but has anyone heard of this? i don't wanna die in this thing.

Hello, welcome to FTE!

What did the dealer say? Did they at least rule out some things?
For example, did they check/replace your Idle Air Control (IAC) valve?

The IAC was my first thought too. Not too uncommon. But I'm curious to hear what else it MIGHT be.

no the dealer really didnt hav any suggestions into what the problem could be. each of the times i brought it in they gave it back saying they couldnt replicate the problem. is there any possibilities for a cause other than the IAC. cause whatever i hear from you guys im going to go to the dealer and tell them.

by the way thanks for the help. ive had this problem since i bought the truck and that was like 2 years ago and these are the only suggestions ive got for a solution.

The symptoms you describe were the initial events that I experienced prior to an IAC solenoid failing just over a week ago (total failure occured about 15 miles later and with occasional CEL prior to failure). Cleaning the IAC solenoid did not cure the problem; a new $85 IAC solenoid, cleaning the MAF sensor, and a new fuel filter did. BTW, the problem only surfaced when the engine was maybe 75% or more into warmup and never when cold. Furthermore, the computer did not store the fault (IAC) into it's continuous memory but rather it surfaced during KOER test.

Yeah, driving does get interesting when you're turning into a parking lot and you lose power steering; I know that feeling. 94 Ranger 4.0L 5SP 4x4.

On another note, I had an intermittent problem on the truck back when it had about 5000 miles on it. The dealer installed a "flight recorder" which enables the driver to press a button and store engine/computer operation data into the flight recorder when an intermittent problem is occuring. These can be useful for resolving intermittent problems as not all intermittent faults are stored when that CEL goes off. You might want to bring this up when you visit the service department. If your dealer is like mine, he doesn't want to replace a part under warranty unless it can be proven bad as Ford will not reimburse him for it.

I've had a problem similar to Kelphis' (also a 2000 3.0 4x4 5-speed) except that I've yet to completely stall out. I'll be pulling off from a freeway or stopping after doing 45+ and instead of coming down to a nice ~900 rpm it's dipping to ~500 or less, oil pressure guage goes awry. I can rev the engine a bit and it's fine again. Also like Kelphi, this has been going on maybe once a week for the past couple of years. Is this a problem I should nip in the bud or just ride it out and count my blessings that it's still turning at least low revs?

CowboyBilly9Mile, I love the idea about the flight recorder. Doing things "RIGHT" can't be beat!
