Hi all, im new to this and is my first post. I have a 2011 F250 Lariat 4x4 6.7 diesel. My problem is my 4wd stopped working a couple days ago and got stuck in the sand. Initially, it was working as i was riding along in the sand and then got into deep loose sand and as soon as i started to spin, i stopped put into neutral and turned the **** to 4L as i already had it 4H as soon as i hit the sand. So at that time a gear wrench appeared and a message that read check 4x4 (i think thats what it said) At this point the front wheels wouldnt spin no more. In either 4H or 4L. So i got pulled out and came home did some mild research and came across that it may it may be the transfer case motor, so i replaced that and went and tried the 4wd in some light sand close by and still didnt work. So i got out and moved the front hubs to manual and then tried again and it works just fine!??
So.... Please help!! Sorry if its been posted before i did try search and didnt come up with nothing.
Sounds like you just lost the vacuum to automatically lock your hubs. That’s why you have the option to manually lock them.
Same thing happened to my 2011 F350 a few years ago. Got the wrench light and no 4x4 while in snow. I’ve just been manually locking them since then. Didn’t bother doing anything to the vacuum system
As said before that's why you have the ability to manually lock the hubs, the vacuum hub system has been prone to failure ever since it came out on the 99 model year.
My 2011 did the same thing except I have a gas motor. It turned out to be the vacuum solenoid up by the radiator. I changed it and I'm back in business.
Thanks for the input and my apologies for the late reply.
Alloro, when i tried removing the caps from the wheels they were seized and i didnt want to break em, so once back in town went to pepboys since they put new tires and they worked on em for free. There were plenty of the big *** military trucks riding around so one offered to pull me out.
A follow up question if I may --- my 4wd is not working, BUT the appropriate lights on the control panel say that 4wd H or L is engaged when the switch is selected. Is this still likely to be a vacuum line issue? Quite frankly I wasn't even aware of how hubs work until recently re-reading the owners manual.
The light circuit is in the motor assembly. If the motor is engaged the light will come on, even if front hubs not engaged. There is no sensor for the front hubs.

Well that explains a lot! I always ASSumed that since the light came on, all was well! Now to try switching hubs from auto to 4wd and see what happens.
