Long time lurker here couldn't find anything like my problem by searching so here it is:
I have a 1999 F250 Super Duty, 5 speed, V10, ESOF is installed but I put warn premium lockouts on last week (you'll see why below). Bought the truck in October 4wheel drive was working up until 2 weeks ago.
About 2 weeks ago I was out shooting with a buddy, top couple inches of his field was thawed and muddy. I got the truck hung up, switched on the ESOF light came on, but no 4wd. Got out locked the hubs re-engaged the 4wd but still nothing in 4-hi or 4-low. I could hear the transfer case motor engaging. Looked over the vacuum lines checked for leaks but had 11 inches of mercury. Pulled the hubs just to have a look and found the drivers side lockout had disintegrated. Figured that was the problem, replaced them with the Warn Premiums tested it out had 4x4 in all ranges. Worked fine Saturday.
Fast forward to today, got a couple inches of snow but it is slick underneath. Lock my hubs in, switch on 4x4, light comes on but no 4wd. Once again I can hear the transfer case motor engaging but there isn't any power to the wheels. I can feel it grab slightly while going down the road and switching from 2wd to 4wd but it still doesn't engage.
Sorry for the long post but I figured if I gave you guys all the information you could help me out a little better. Hope it isn't too bad a problem I'm at work with more snow on the way, no 4wd, and I live on the side of a hill.
Started to at work but after starting the locking ring out I realized if I broke it or bent it out of shape I'd be S.O.L. until I could get another (only place nearby that might have one would be NAPA). Going to slide down the hill to the garage tonight and give everything a good hard look. At this point I am at a loss, luckily the snow has stopped for now and the roads are much better.
Thanks for the link but I've already found the problem. The new warn lockout failed Monday morning due to the spindle bearing in the knuckle being bad. I failed to notice you could grab the spindle and move it up and down 1/8" when I put the new lockout on. When you spin the front drive shaft by hand you can see the axle shaft move up and down. Have an appointment with the mechanic Monday, he agreed with me that the worn bearing was likely the problem, hoping he doesn't find anything else wrong with it. If it were warmer or my garage was taller I'd fix it myself.
In the mean time I put my remaining factory lockout back on and crossing my fingers that it holds out until I get everything fixed.
